Cut and Paste

The purpose of my artwork is to convey the struggle many people, especially young girls and women, face in trying to find their identity in a world full of influence from social media. With the rising prevalence and normalization of plastic surgery and photo editing among celebrity figures, beauty standards have become increasingly harsh. This is seen especially in many magazines which tend to all have similar headlines that promote sexism and pressure women to look or behave a certain way in order to be deemed “worthy.”
 
This piece represents my personal experience growing up as a girl and having gone through social comparison due to the promotion of beauty standards in popular media forms from a young age, such as the cartoon princesses I would watch on TV and want to emulate after consistently seeing the same physical features that made them considered beautiful.
