Encroachment of Dread
By: Alanis S.
The dread of growing up is one that everyone will eventually experience in some shape or form. As I am 18 and going into college, I wanted to express my feelings on the matter through this artwork. The person graduating is a child in kindergarten, with a forget-me-not flower in her hair, and a skeleton looming next to her. Many think of graduating as a good thing, that the passage of education is something you just want to get over with already, when for me, it's the opposite. The fear of knowing my life is flying by me before I can mentally digest it fills me with a quiet anxiety. I hope the viewers feel an underlying feeling, but I want that feeling to still be interpretative from person to person. The red could mean anger, but combined with the grey and white could mean unease. The blue of the flower could be sadness, or tranquility. The forget-me-not is obvious in meaning of its name: not wanting to forget. Holding onto your childhood and past as much as you can before time tears at your memories.
