Fading Away
By: Eden H.
“Fading away” is a portrayal of the impact Alzheimer’s disease has on mental health. The older women has wandered onto a train lost, hoping it will take her back to the home she faintly remembers. This is a common occurrence for people who suffer from it to lose their sense of self, unable to remember who or where they are, becoming lost in their own mind. I hope the viewers feel sorrow and grief as she searches for her identity. On her purse she has a medical ID bracelet tied onto it which contains her caretakers number and name to contact them when people find her. The abandon environment on the train reflects how she has been tossed aside by her family and their poor attempt to care for her illness. Whens she’s lost she always finds herself at peace with the serene mood of the train as her memories gradually disappear into the night. I was inspired to create this art by my grandma who is beginning to suffer from dementia and hope to bring to attention of what it does to a person and how we must stay by their side to comfort and help them deal with the loss. I thought the black and white colors a pencil creates perfectly portrays her life losing color nearing the end.
