The Daily Buzz
By: Tra' Slaughter
This is a self-portrait. As an artist suffering from bi-polar disorder as well as anxiety, all of the words being carried by the flying bees relate to how I feel at times due to my mental health, or lack there of. The subject is shown in different poses representing motion as well as varying state of mind swatting at or protecting himself from the bees and the emotions that they carry are prepare to sting the subject with. I know that most people can relate to this feeling, although the messages carried by the bees are different for everyone. The note relaying the prescription at the bottom is meant to be a generic note that can be attached to any medication prescribed. The side effects listed are personal, but also feelings that most anyone can relate to. I work in multiple mediums and styles. I chose a figurative representation of myself as the subject because I use art as my personal therapy and wanted to feel this piece as it was created and I also wanted the piece to be able to tell it’s story on its own. Materials used include: acrylic, latex, oil and gouache paint. Charcoal, marker and coffee were also used.
