Unwanted Spotlight
By: Sebastien O.
My inspiration for this piece is the fact that I am transgender. As a queer man, I've been treated differently because I present differently than the gender marker on my documents. I receive a lot of stares and judgement as if I'm indecent or walking in the middle of a busy highway. I'm constantly presented with an audience that quickly becomes undesirable because I mistakenly delivered the wrong line in the scene. Everyday I'm left feeling like a kid on stage who forgot his blocking on the day of performance. I'm given an audience that only provides awkward stares at my entrance instead of an applause like the other actors. I'm like an unprepared actor at an unplanned dress rehearsal, frustrated at the spontaneity of the setup , but more frustrated at the unwanted spotlight and its glare.
