Elementary Student Wins People’s Choice Award in Texas Mental Health Creative Arts Contest

After announcing this year’s winners for the Texas Mental Health Creative Arts Contest, our team and community members voted on their favorite artwork to receive the People’s Choice Award. We’re happy to share that Harper Self, an elementary student, is the 2024 People’s Choice Award winner for her artwork “Good Thoughts.”

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) hosted a Virtual Reception on Tuesday, May 21 to celebrate all the art contest winners and recognize Harper’s accomplishment.

Although she’s officially on summer break, Harper was kind enough to meet with our team to share more about herself and her art. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Can you tell us about your art? What does it mean to you?

My art is special to me, but it was also hard to make.

2. What materials did you use to make it?

I used paint, pencils, and markers to make it. Also, I think I made this on construction paper.

3. What’s your favorite part of your artwork?

My favorite part is probably the positive side.

4. If you’re feeling down like you drew on the left side of your art, what are some things that help you feel better?

I like to call my friends and play games. My favorite game right now is probably Candy Land.

5. How do you hope people will feel when they look at your art?

I hope they feel positive and happy.
